Runway: Jil Sander Spring 2008
Jil Sander’s Spring ‘08 line debuts at Milan Fashion Week. Lovely, lovely clothes.

My Superhero necklace arrived last week and I adore it. I’d pinch its cheeks and rub its tummy if I could. It took me a year to decide which style I wanted. I was torn between the multi-color varieties and the styles with one shape of bead. This necklace matches everything in my closet that is not similarly Bora-Bora blue.
It’s stylish to support your local artisans.
I just got the best-ever invoice for two of my favorite beauty products:
Item 1017920 1 NARS/The Multiple - Orgasm/Orgasm
Item 1027192 1 Philosophy/Hope in a Jar/ oz
Nars Orgasm is a best-selling shade of powder blush. It’s supposed to give your face the flush of having just done it. The shade is now available as a multiple, a color that can be used on eyes or lips or cheeks. Awesome for travel. The Multiple Orgasm is available only at Sephora.
Hope in a Jar is a lovely face cream. It’s perfect for this time of year, not too heavy but not too light. Philosophy products are great and of course I adore the wordy packaging. They make shower gels that smell like baked goods. I’m more of an herbal girl, but they are yummy.
I roll my eyes a lot. Bad habit, tough one to beat. Unboxing, that weird phenomenon of taking pictures of something as you’re removing its packaging, never fails to get an eyeroll.
Without further ado (but with eyes rolling and tongue planted firmly in cheek), I present to you the Christian Lacroix unbagging!
Dagnabbit! Oscar De La Renta used my genius idea before I did. His Spring 2008 show featured live music by the Polyphonic Spree. Total psychic fashion theft. Shit.
There were whispers that Marc Jacobs’ Spring 2008 runway show was very Grey Gardens. I see some madness in pairing these pieces together but I see no Big or Little Edie. For fans of the documentary/musical, I present Jezebel’s highlarious take on the Marc Jacobs show.
Tim Gunn’s Guide to Style debuted last week on Bravo. Consumers of fashion reality TV will know Gunn as the adviser to the contestants on Project Runway (he is also the Chief Creative Officer of fashion mega-company Liz Claiborne). He is fabulously entertaining on Project Runway. His quips of “Make it work!” and “Carry on” have made their way into everyday parlance. Or perhaps that’s just my everyday parlance, being that I spend part of my week at fashion school.
Gunn is still charming but I don’t care about makeover shows. The original BBC version of What Not To Wear is hysterical and I still can’t sit through the piles of sweatpants and a trip to the salon for corrective color and professional cut. I’d rather Gunn’s exquisite, natural-born taste be showcased at professional runway shows or department stores, telling us what works and what’s wrong. Gunn’s sidekick on the show is supermodel Veronica Webb, who hasn’t relaxed into the job. She had a few bursts of sass, which I appreciated, but her stage personality wasn’t as big as the host’s.
I’ll watch the show a time or two more. There’s something about watching strangers rifle through their closets that makes me uncomfortable, regardless of the show. But I need a little hit of Gunn to tide me over until the next Project Runway.
Vera Wang’s line for Kohl’s went on sale today. Cute stuff. And lots of stuff — lingerie, outerwear, shoes, accessories, home deco and apparel. The shirred jacket I like is sold out in my size, but it’s an acrylic blend. Suspicious. But these are cute clothes, affordable and very office appropriate. I like.
Burning Man runways got a workout this year. This year’s trends included short, flouncy crinolines and wedgie-deep-up-your-bottom pants for women. There was omnipresent fake fur and metallic fabric. Men are still wearing coveralls, too-small dresses and [most unfortunately] fleece vests adorned with glowsticks. For those of you who write to ask when I’m going to feature some of my own creations, look no further: the dusty corset and bustle pictured above were made by me. Note the bowler hat accessorized with a headlamp.
