Guy Friday: Five Excuses For Wearing A Scarf

1. It’s cold outside. Scarves will beat back that mean wind or make up for not wearing enough layers. A scarf will winterize your raincoat.
2. It’s cold inside. Scarves indoors are cool awesome. You can keep a scarf at your desk for when it’s arctic in your cube. You can wear a scarf with your jammies when you’re curled up on the couch. Scarves are cozy.
3. Scarves are jaunty, says Ted — wear them easy, not too fussy. I agree.
4. If someone knits you a scarf you are lucky. You have to wear it.
5. You’re in an indie rock band. This one’s kind of weird because it looks hot under those stage lights. The style jury’s kind of out on this one but it does seem that a precedent has been set.
A particularly in-vogue scarf style is the scarf lock. Instead of wraping like boa around your neck you fold the scarf in half wrap around your neck and slide the two lose ends thru the loop of the other end. I remeber wearing as a kid (I suppose my mom did it that way so i wouldn’t lose) but it’s pretty “in” right now.
“Out” for the alst hundred years has been wrapping your scarf around your head and neck. You place one end below your ear at neck level and then work it over your neck, down past your other ear, and then wrap around your neck. Though fabulously popular in St. Petersburg and Vladivostok, it’s just not worth it ;>
After pricing a cashmere number from Burberry’s at $225, I walked down the street to Brooks’ and got a lambs wool for $35, half off. Dunno what that says about me, save that on a cold ass day in San Francisco, fashion decisions still have to be made.
Thanks to this post I wore a scarf last Friday night and was thankful.
